Fergie: Courted By Corporate America
MSN.com just released a video news story (including clips of Fergie’s live shows) talking about how her success makes her very appealing to big corporations. It’s pretty interesting, you can watch it here.
And AfterEllen.com just did an editorial about the news story. Here’s an excerpt:
Hold up a minute. This is sort of funny. Big business and Fergie? How the heck did this happen? If she’s invited to ring the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange, I’m going to quickly start building an ark, because the apocalypse can only be a few minutes behind. Achieving pop music status is not the same as having corporations in your back pocket or handbag (or whatever means Ferguson uses to lug her cash around). But Ferguson now seems to have both pop status and financial support, with two major companies aligning themselves directly with her name for product placement partnerships.
Personally, I see nothing wrong with what she’s dong. If she can make her concerts free to her audience by having a corporate sponsor, I think everybody wins. What’s the big deal? Just because I would go to a concert sponsored by Verizon doesn’t man that I’m going to buy or use their products. I have free will, after all. And everyone else does too.
People, stop getting all over Fergie for doing something that doesn’t hurt us, and really can help us. (Or, you can pay $100 to see her next concert if you want. I’ll be glad to go for free!)
